Brownie Points wins major Remington Park turf race.
Brownie Points, the only female in a seven-horse field, rallied in the stretch to pass Tricky Causeway on Monday and win the $148,500 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Breeders Cup Handicap at Remington Park.
The win by the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Forest Wildcat in Remington Parks most lucrative turf race had a touch of symbolism, as the mares trainer, Donnie Von Hemel, is the tracks all-time leader, and the win came on the 20th anniversary of the tracks opening.
Tricky Causeway, ridden by Eddie Martin Jr., took the lead early in the 1 1/8-mile race and held it most of the way before giving way to Brownie Points, who made a late run in the middle of the track under jockey Luis Quinonez.
Brownie Points, the 4-5 favorite, won by a half-length, finishing in 1:50.37 on firm turf. Tricky Causeway was another length ahead of Brego, last years DeBartolo Handicap winner. Ernesto, Red Rock Creek, Regal Career and Sumac rounded out the field.
Brownie Points paid $3.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Tricky Causeway paid $7.40 and $5.20, while Brego paid $6.20.
Brownie Points is 9-for-24 lifetime, including 4-of-5 at Remington Park, and now has career earnings of $928,942 for her owner, Josephine Abercrombies Pin Oak Stable of Versailles, Ky.
It was the mares sixth straight top-three finish, a run which includes a win in the Grade 3 Ouija Board Handicap at Lone Star Park on May 26.
In the $50,000 race for femalesthe Ricks Memorial Stakestrainer Steve Asmussens My Three Sisters prevailed under jockey Cliff Berry. In the $50,000, six-furlong Clever Trevor Stakes for 2-year-olds, Asmussen also won with King Gulch, ridden by Quinonez.
