An exercise rider for trainer Steve Asmussen has died. After being injured in a riding accident at Saratoga Race Course.

Parker Buckley suffered a head injury at the upstate New York track on Monday. Asmussen told the Daily Racing Form that Buckley was galloping a horse when he was unseated on the Oklahoma training track.

Buckley, a former jockey, was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was placed in a medically induced coma. Medical staff waited until his family could arrive before taking him off life support.

The hospital confirmed Tuesday that Buckley had died.

David Mullins, breeder, dies.

David Mullins, a longtime breeder, owner, and bloodstock agent who operated Doninga Farm in Lexington, Ky., died Monday at St. Joseph’s hospice center there from pancreatic cancer. He was 51.

Mullins, a native of County Kildare, Ireland, came to the United States in 1976. He was employed at Spendthrift, Airdrie, and Domino Stud before founding Doninga in 1985.

Among his top feats in the horse business were the private sales of Baby Zip, who eventually became the dam of the 2004 Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, and Drina, the dam of the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner, Spain. He also consigned Saoirse, a Canadian champion who sold for $2.2 million in 2001 at Keeneland.

Mullins was involved with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club, the Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association, and Central Kentucky Riding for Hope. He is survived by his daughter, Dara, and son, Chase.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home at 463 Main St. in Lexington. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Church.
